El golpe de estado del general Pavía debilitó la primera república, contando en sucesivos meses con otros alzamientos de militares a favor de Alfonso XII. Ademas, la burguesía catalana y los comerciantes clamaban por la restauración de la monarquía. Por su parte, el rey Alfonso XII se pronunció en Sandhurst. Por fin, el 29 de diciembre de 1874, el golpe de estado de Martínez Campos traería de vuelta a Alfonso XII.<br />

El principal constructor del sistema político de la Restauración fue Cánovas del Castillo, bajo una actitud de conciliación de las dos corrientes políticas, así como de la iglesia. Sin embargo, en las reformas llevadas a cabo en sus primeros años de gobierno fue evidente el recorte de derechos y libertades de los ciudadanos. Por otra parte, Cánovas quiso acabar con el régimen de los generales que existía, nombrando al rey como jefe supremo del Ejercito., con el fin de someter el poder militar al poder civil. Al mismo tiempo, se buscó la paz en los procesos revolucionarios, tanto en las guerra carlista como en la de Cuba; ambas llegarían en los primeros años de su mandato.<br />

En el proceso de formación de las cortes constituyentes, para redactar una nueva constitución, se estableció el sufragio universal masculino. Aun así, el sistema era fraudulento y la gran mayoría de los votos fueron manipulados<br />

===Pilares===<br />
Los pilares que sustentaron la restauración monárquica fueron cuatro: la corona, las cortes, la constitución que se aprobaría en 1876 y el sistema político canovista.<br />

En primer lugar, la corona se erige como institución fundamental en España, dado que compartiría soberanía con las cortes y la constitución le otorgaría amplios poderes, como la potestad de nombrar al presidente del gobierno, de disolver las cortes y de ocupar el cargo de jefe supremo del ejercito.<br />
<br />
A su vez, las cortes comparten la soberanía con el rey, y se distribuyen en un sistema bicameral. Por un lado, el senado, que consta de senadores escogidos por el rey y con cargo vitalicio; y por otro el Congreso de los Diputados, cuya composición se elegía por sufragio, sistema que fue cambiando entre censitario restringido y universal masculino. Dado este sistema, las cotes no representaban la voluntad del pueblo.<br />

Por otro lado, la constitución de 1876 sustentó este sistema político. Esta constitución fue una de las mas consensuadas y a su vez la que requirió menos debate, salvo para el tipo de estado respecto a la religión. Es también una de las constituciones mas ambiguas hasta el momento, ya que fue diseñada para abarcar tanto la política conservadora como la liberal. Esta constitución, pues, recoge el reparto de soberanía entre el rey y las cortes, así como el sistema de estas. Establece un estado confesional, con libertad de culto, así como otros derechos y libertades, aunque en ocasiones restringidas. Permaneció en vigor hasta 1931.<br />
